Confessions of a Sentient War Engine An Old Guy/Cybertank Adventure Book 4 eBook Timothy J Gawne
The Old Guy Cybertank series, (vol. 1-4), can be enjoyed on several levels. On the surface it is a interesting account of the start and history of the inheritors of humankind cybernetic intelligences. These creatures were developed as weapons of war to stop an alien invasion. It becomes apparent early on that humanity was in serious trouble before the aliens showed up. Out of control population growth and the morally bankrupt political philosophy of the ruling class was destroying both the planet Earth and Humanity! The first volume of the series ends with the aliens and the NeoLiberals, (ruling class), defeated with the rest of humanity and their cybertank creations organizing a new civilization.Take the future tech out of the story and it sounds like a condemnation of progressive political thought! Without much effort the political conflict within humanity could have been lifted from present day events! Old Guy by volume 4 has lived for thousands of years and has all of human history in his memory banks. Although his mind was built on a human pattern he was built to be independent and think for himself he is definitely not a slave! Sometime after the events in volume (1), Humanity disappeared! This is never fully explained. The cybertanks generally think humans evolved beyond this reality and hope that they will return. In till then the Cybertanks will keep on with their own civilization and loving it!!!
The personalities the author created for the cybertanks were people you could care about and I look forward to reading more of his work.

Confessions of a Sentient War Engine An Old Guy/Cybertank Adventure Book 4 eBook Timothy J Gawne Reviews
I really liked the first book in this series. The second and third were also really good but different. This one is like the first and also very good. It's a great mix of humor and hard-core military sci fi. Some of the stories are a bit short but others are great. There is a story where a BOLO tank thinks it is Jesus Christ it sounds stupid but it's not. There is another story where a BOLO basically meets the X-men and it could be a novel all by itself. Worth getting into.
The series returns to its roots, telling random tales from the life of Old Guy. Thematically, these tales are about sacrifice, loss, and forgiveness, and how this can allow both parties to grow.
Mostly Old Guy bumbles around getting into trouble and escaping through luck, firepower, sneakiness, and friends.
A good read for military sf fans.
Is this deep fiction? No. Does this book have a meaningful message for its reader? Nope. Will you have fun reading it? Absolutely!
I can't really explain it better than the author has in the blurb, but basically imagine a book written from the first person perspective of a sentient tank. Yes, it's as ridiculous as it sounds, but that's what sci-fi is for! Take the plunge, it's definitely a fun book!
I look at this book as the nominal end of the series. There's a fifth book, but I think I'll stop reading here and leave the rear fir another day. All in all, another excellent addition to the series. I've enjoyed Old Guy very much over the past few weeks. There's just the right amount of everything into this series. Whee!
I finished the series in 4 days. I think my marriage is salvageable if I can catch up on the honey-do list and grovel a bit. Getting some Chunky-monkey ice-cream as an apology went a long way.
The 4 volumes were some serious fun. His critique of neoliberalism was spot on. Just enjoyable reads that has me hoping for a few more volumes from Old Guy or perhaps some of his buddies.
Timothy's Cybertank universe is a great alternative to Baen's Bolos (I love both, but take issue with how blindly the majority of Bolos blindly followed Concordiat policy even when it became mutually destructive). My favorite book in the Cybertank series was Space Battleship Scharnhorst, but Confessions is a close second.
SPOILER WARNING
This book is similar to the first book in the series (Chronicles of Old Guy) and both are most true to the Bolo style of several short stories connected by a common continuum (though the Bolos had less overall continuity than the Cybertanks). This one fills in more of Old Guy's origin and resolves a conflict between the Cybertanks and one of their arch enemies. The Cybertanks are more independently minded, and their loyalties are not as deeply programmed (they turned on the Neoliberals who attempted to use them, where as the majority of the Bolos followed through with a mutually destructive war that could have been prevented).
Philosophically, Heinlein fans (myself included) will love the deconstruction of centralized government (though not as extensive as Neoliberal Economists Must Die), and there is a great theory on how alien civilizations might interact.
The first book in this series was a series of short stories first person narrated by a BOLO style tank called Old Guy. It was intelligent, well written, serious, and whimsical. One of the best and most original variants on the BOLO idea out there. The two sequels switched to real plot lines and multiple viewpoints third person and were still good. This book is more of a direct sequel to the first. It is back to first person narration by Old Guy. Like the first book it is a series of short stories. Unlike the first book the stories are much more variable. Some are appetizers and others are almost novellas. There is a plot that links the stories but it is like a lazy river meandering here and there until it finally gets to the sea. Recommended.
